One of the interesting things that you can utilize in your home décor that  some people consider to be more of an arts and crafts, is designing with carpet remnants. I know what you are thinking the first thing that comes to your head is that this is dirty and how can this possibly look good. Well the people that are designing with carpet remnants are not designing with old used up pieces of carpet. They are deigns with brand new never been used before pieces of carpet that would be tossed out to the trash if not picked up by anyone. In a way this is a great way to recycle and save a bunch of synthetic fibers from going to the dump. So what can you do with these so called carpet remnants? Well we are going to toss some ideas around.

Carpet Remnant Design Ideas

Idea #1: Turn an Accident into Custom Design

The first idea that is sort of a simplistic artistic idea is to use a carpet remnant as a patch. Don’t you hate it when you have perfectly good carpet and for some reason or another you have a party, spill something, or even have a brand new puppy to the home that ate it, whatever the reason you get a spot in your carpet that is ruined and must come out. Well most people waste no time cutting the piece out going into the closet and harvesting another piece the exact same size that is the same color to put in its place. This is a great idea to help cover up carpet damage you just have to make sure that all the carpet fibers are going the same direction that the main carpet is going. What if you can do something different though? Some people actually place not just one patch but they buy carpet remnants in the same color and replace patches throughout their entire home. This really gives a room a great custom design feel. If you have good quality bound carpet remnants than you can almost do anything with them to create custom flooring.

Idea#2: Carpet a Good Sound and Visual Material

The next idea is to go vertical with carpet remnants. Another great idea is what many home theater enthusiasts do. They will go and buy large amounts of discount carpet remnants, sometimes different colors depending on the room design and they staple gun it to the walls in their home.  This is to help with sound and also a visual appeal to the room. If you can find great carpet pieces that are in large enough sections you can really make a cheap sound absorbing room. It does take some skill and craft to line the carpet up perfectly and screw into the studs straight but if you take some time it is cheaper than actually having a profession come in and do the same thing. Many in home recording studios also take advantage of the same idea. Since they only need to do it in a small booth in the studio this is normally what they do. Insulate the wall and then get cheap carpet to cover the insulation and they have a sound responsive booth.

Idea#3: Area rugs

This idea actually came when I was designing a custom living room for a family in the Bay Area. The colors that this family chose for this particular room was all based around a fabric that was imported from Italy. From the chairs, to the drapes, to the loveseat even the pillar candles colors and stands were all designed to be incorporated with this amazing fabric. Well these also choose a carpet for a portion of their house that really tied the downstairs with the upstairs. After all design was said and done the living room was still lacking something to make the room feel warm. An area rug was in high demand for this room. After spending about a week trying to find an area rug to tie in this special fabric with these carpets and had no luck I had the idea at 3:45am. I can use the extra carpet remnants that were left over and make an area rug that would not clash or fight the existing carpet because it would be the exact same. So I cut the largest remnant to the size we needed went to an upholstery store and asked them to put on a simple tan canvas edge on all sides of the carpet to turn it into an area rug. In about 3 hours they called me to come pick it up and for $123.44 I got an complete finished rug with edged sewed so the rug would not fringe and they even put a new rug pad (which if you have rugs i would highly recommend) that just glued to the bottom of the carpet for me. This is an amazing idea that if you have the opportunity and are in a design dilemma may help you out.

Ideas #4: Outside Runners

One of the main ideas that can help you keep your house clean is to turn a carpet remnant into outside or garage runners. This is a great design idea if you want to have an area that is a high traffic area going into your home to be protected. It works great it to protect garage floors or even covered patios. The big advantage of this idea is if you have pets, kids or a party people that are going into your house will have a change to get off any dirt or grime on the outside runner before they track it into you house. Then you can easily pull these runner and wash them off every other week or so depending on the usage. This is a cheap way to keep your indoors clean and still provide a professional carpet runner to your home.

Where to get Carpet Remnants

Now you are probably saying ok I have all these ideas and some of my own want to try out but where do I find carpet remnants? Well I’m not going to lie I have yet to come across a discount carpet remnant store but that does not mean carpet remnants are hard to get.

Option #1: The first place you should start is carpet and flooring stores. Make sure they do their own instillation because they will definitely have a bunch of extra cut pieces that they cant do anything with. Some carpet store I go into actually have a carpet remnant section where they dump all their usable piece they don’t want. Depending on the size they may have a $5.00 stick put on them but most of them they just want to get rid of and are free.

Option #2: The next place to check out is factory direct carpet warehouses. These places you can find online and sometimes they have a warehouse you can actually go and buy all their old carpets that did not sell the year before. Most of these places have all final sales and will ship the carpet directly to your door.

Option #3: Go check out any new homes being built in your area. When developers get to the finishing portion of the homes they are building and they are putting the carpet in most of the tie the contractors ha perfectly good carpet they just throw away. If you are able to drive up and ask them if they have any carpet that you can have most of the time they will be more than happy to give you the pieces that are not gonna use.

Hopefully this has helped you in your carpet remnant search and ideas of what you can do. With a little craft and creativity you can really make a difference in your home décor and home design that will not cost you much money at all. The goal…. to make your home as relaxing and comfortable as possible.
