One of the questions we keep getting asked is tips for your front and backyard lights. Many people know now about the kind of lighting that is available to them from our Garden Lighting page, but many still have questions about how and what to look for when setting up your exterior lighting. I think the main issues that people are having with garden lights is where to start. It can be very overwhelming with all the options out there. We will break it down into steps so hopefully you can get all the tips you need to create your relaxing environment just the way that you like it.
Step #1: Top Section
The first thing you need to do is to beak your yard down into three main sections or divisions. The first division is going to focus on the tall items in your yard. That includes trees, bushes, gazebos, and even the exterior of your house. This large area is what you want to highlight at night. After you have the largest elements that are in your yard you need to decide how to space the lights throughout. These lights should be the brightest lights in your yard like wired spot lights and just highlight the largest things that you want to accentuate in your living environment. This really helps you pick the most dominant features in your yard and helps you take advantage of the beauty that you already have in place.
Step#2: Middle Section
This section is obviously the eye level to lower eye level section of your yard. This area is supposed to have good garden light but not be very bright or distracting. This is where the solar garden lights come into play. Solar powered garden lights are perfect for this division. They are not too strong but strong enough to light up your garden. When it comes to garden light you need to make sure that this division is the overlap area of lights. You are not spot lighting anything you are simply lighting the back drop. The taller elements in the yard have already been highlighted like a skyline and now it is time to light up the center of the skyline so to speak. Outdoor garden lights need to have this element to really make sure that everything is tied together and relaxing for the people enjoying the environment.
Step#3: Floor Section
Finally we reach the section that really leads you to the different areas of your yard. This area is mainly the ground cover and the path lights. The garden light in this area is the lights that are not very bright at all more decorative if anything. You want the light in your yard to start bight on the tall items and then gradually diminish as you work your way down to the floor. The floor lights are really just supposed to visually pull you toward the areas of the yard or house. Led garden lights are used quite a bit in this area of the yard since they do provide such a nice decorative feel.
Hopefully this has given you some help with getting started. These are the basics that landscape architects use when it gets to lighting a client’s yard. Just remember organize according to the three area: top/tall section, middle section, and floor /ground section. If you organize your light this way and choose the right lights for each use you will have the amazing look you are going for.  Relaxation does depend on garden light and garden light intensity. If this is done improperly than your entire look could be at risk.
