This is probably one of the more fun design items that is a must to do. Interior paint is one of the first things that you need to do when you are designing your interior environment for feel and comfort. The interior paint on the walls is what is going to make the difference if the relaxing space says welcome or if it is being cold and offish. Something that is a tip to think about is not just the color and shade (which we will get into shortly) but the effect that color has paired with lighting. Interior paint really changes a room based on simple lighting and a warm feel that both of these design elements complement each other on.
Design
Now let’s get into the design components of interior painting. The first thing to look into is colors. Colors of a room can be driven by almost anything. They can be driven by: an overall house theme, furniture colors, accent colors, flooring colors, silk plants or even certain textures. When it comes to interior paint colors it is important that you choose not only a basic color family like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, but that you go further and look into shades and those colors that are not quite red or yellow but something in between. These will give you the custom colors that will really make people feel welcome.
Techniques
One of the most important features is the fact that to help create a relaxing space with interior painting you can use certain techniques that can aid in a more rustic or natural look other than simple white walls or a flat solid paint color.
Option 1: You can use alternating wall colors technique. This means that you choose two colors that are of the same tone and if you have a room that has four walls you alternate colors. One in the middle will be one color and then the two on the sides will be the other color. This really breaks up the spaces and at the same time defines the look.
Option 2: Texturing is a way to get more of a traditional feel on the walls without having to do much work to achieve this. This helps give the wall depth and a look of customization. This can be done by first painting in one solid color and letting that dry and then buying the same color just in a darker tone and using a sponge or rag to lightly apply a texture to the top.
Option 3: Providing a plaster texture. Now this is not just a tip that uses paint to fool the eye into texture this actually is taking plaster and giving your interior walls a texture. Most of the time all you have to do is apply the texture great for like a mission look, let dry and then paint a nice natural tone.
Materials
One of the things that you need to get to paint your relaxing environment is pretty basics. You need:
- 1-2 Gallons of paint of your choice
- 1 roller with 2-3 replacement roller sleeves
- 1 2” paint brush
- Paint roller tray
- A roll of painters tape
And that’s all you need. With paint as thick as it is nowadays, interior painting doesn’t really need you to primer anymore unless you are painting over black or bright solid red. Prep Work is really not that hard just may take some time. All you need to do is to tape up the ceiling border so that you get a great straight edge on the areas you do not want painted. You should do this around closets, door frames, and any kind of molding.
Best Interior Paint
When it comes to choosing the best interior paint you really can’t go wrong if you are getting paint form Home Depot, Lowes, or Sears. You never want to cheap paint and get an off brand that is like $5-$10 a gallon. Spend the money now and save later. One of the tips that can help you is a great rule of thumb everyone should know. Your paint should not smell bad period. If your paint has a nasty bad smell to it than you are probably using low quality paint. Yes paint will have a smell to it but is should not smell so bad that you have to air out your house after you use it. Well what kind of paint finishes are out there?
- Flat paint: this is a dry look, sometimes chalky that does not reflect light and is just a base paint. It is easily scuffed and marked so only can be used in certain areas.
- Eggshell/Satin: This is a nice look that is not shiny but not chalky either. It is a number one choice to really show the true color of the paint for normal wall use.
- Semi gloss: This is a gloss finish paint that has a shine to it but not really reflecting. This finish is used for borders of doors inside and out. Sometimes used on bathroom walls to prevent mold and mildew.
- Gloss: Gloss finish is probably the most reflective paint that you can find. It will literally give any light a mirror look to it. Even small floating candles that you may have in a bathroom. This paint is used in bathrooms and kids play areas due to the fact that it can resist water and moisture. This paint is never used on walls.
This is the basics when it comes to interior painting. You do not need much money or supplies to actually paint all you need is to get some colors of paint you like and off you go. Your relaxing environment is easily made to help your home decor and that warm comfortable feel that everyone wants. You just have to take the plunge and run with it.
Overview
- Tip#1: Interior painting can be done with trying to match furniture but looking at shades and mixtures of colors really gives you a custom feel.
- Tip #2: Take advantage of what pallets are available at home improvement stores, they tend to do a good job pairing 3-5 colors that you can use in your room to make a relaxing space.
-Tip #3: You can add texture to your walls to have a different feel by simply using a sponge and a darker shaded color.
-Tip #4: Materials should be kept to a minimum and it might be a good idea to cut open a plastic bag so when you are rolling the walls no drips get on the floor.
-Tip #5: Your paint should never smell bad or require you to air out your home. If you have paint like this you probably have cheap paint that is harmful to your health.
