Most of the comments that we are getting in our e-mails are asking us to be more specific about material fabric differences. I think that we covered the basics well on our articles on upholstery material and upholstery fabrics (if you haven’t yet you can click them to read)but more people keep asking about more specific difference between material fabrics and usage ideas. We are getting many people that are in the market to buy upholstery material fabric and are overwhelmed with that is out there. We are going to help those that are in the shopping process and maybe need help with, not what is out there, but ideas they can utilize in their own homes using material fabrics and clarity in what can be used for what.

Clothing fabrics

The first issue that many see to be stumbling on is the difference between home décor material fabric and dress material fabric. Now the first thing that you need to recognize is the fact that there is a difference between the two. Dress material fabric or clothing fabrics are meant to breath, be light, flashy, and have an extremely more detailed woven pattern that you will notice in close proximity. Material fabric for home design is meant to be heavier, stronger, and visually appealing but not detailed.  You would never use curtain fabric material to make a dress out of so why would you use dress material fabric for curtains. This is a mistake that many people seem to keep on struggling with and doo not fully understand why they cannot do this until it is already done. They are two different fabrics made for two very different things.

Tip #1: One thing that you can do is not totally use dress material fabric for the main fabric but oyu can decorate with it and use it as an accent to your drapes or couch or pillows. Use is not as the main material just a nice boarder or band of fabric.

Upholstery Fabric Material

These materials are ever heavy duty. They are made to withstand temperature changes, UV rays, being sat on, and harsher conditions that they need to be durable for. This is where fabric lining material comes into play and really helps with the durability of this kind of fabric. This fabric is really heavy and is not meant to move around every much. Yes it is meant to stretch, expand and bend but not to be moved. If moved too much ripping and tearing occurs. Material fabric on the other hand is designed to be durable and lighter weight and used for basic design materials. Slight difference but really two different materials.

Tip #2: One property that upholstery fabric material has is that is not as delicate as dress fabrics and does have more of a harsher punishment tolerance. If you need fabric that is stronger than material fabric this is a great choice for you.

So What Can Material Fabric Be Used For

Well there are thousands of applications that material fabrics really shine through. The first is that they are great for basic clothing nothing special. This is what they a have been designed to do. In home décor however they are great for pillows, chair slipcovers, table cloths, and a variety of bed coverings, blankets and comforters. There really is not law that says you cannot cross usage of these different materials the tip is not to cross properties and elements of these different material fabrics where they don’t belong or will not be functional. You need to think about visuals, feel and how the fabric will help you get to your goal of a warm comforting space.
