One of the most exciting developments in furniture especially for the home is purchasing unfinished furniture. Unfinished furniture is one of the things that many believe is trendy and people will soon forget about this process and return to leaving furniture to the large corporations to finish and design. I disagree with this completely. Once you try it you will, if have not already, decided it is much better than just having a duplicate twin that thousands of other people have as well. There are many positives to take into consideration that you should see as opportunities not to be scared of.

A great thing that unfinished wood furniture provides you with is the fact that you can do your own quality control on the furniture. Most unfinished furniture stores that are scattered around the United States really pride themselves in the quality of real wood that they can bring to your home. A wonderful thing for unfinished furniture is the fact that because the furniture is not finished and covered up the manufacturer cannot hide anything from you under paint or laminates. Everything in about the piece is exposed and available for you to check out before you purchase so you know exactly what you are buying so you know that your piece of unfinished furniture will last you for years to come.

Another benefit is the fact that you do have many choices which is always nice. Unfinished furniture at smaller furniture shops, comes in a couple of different kinds of woods for you to choose from and more of a larger variety of different kinds of woods at larger shops. The most popular wood choices that you have are unfinished oak furniture and unfinished pine furniture. Oak is a bit more expensive around $200 for smaller pieces and can run up into the thousands depending on amount of detail in the piece as well as the larger the size the more expensive. Pine on the other hand is a bit cheaper but because it is considered a wet wood you need to inquire about drying and make sure that it has been properly prepared to be furnished by you. All of these questions your unfinished furniture store will be able to answer.  My local unfinished furniture shop has many wood choices for you to choose from like which is ice because you can find a type of wood to meet your budget. You should be able to find aspen, redwood, alder, oak and pine. Mainly all of these woods have basically the same benefits the only thing you need to take into consideration is what you want the look to be.

Very rarely people will buy unfinished furniture to paint a solid color. Those that do know what they are doing and most of the time buys the cheapest wood available to them. The people that are interested in wood types are the ones that want to keep the unfinished furniture in its natural condition and show the wood. Stains and varnishes are what many need to finish their raw pieces of wood. This can change the look of any type of wood mainly lighter or darker. Let’s look at the most popular types of woods so you can become familiar with what your choices are.

Pine: This type of wood has amazing qualities and versatility. It is the wood that is just about perfect for anything. It has great grain detail and patterns and when finished can be varnished really yellow like a warm honey color or can be varnished to look almost pinkish and red. It’s a fairly easy wood to work with and very affordable.

.

Alder: this wood is more of a harder wood. If you want a traditional darker wood for your unfinished furniture and great grain patterns this kind of wood is for you. This wood is more on the masculine side of wood due to the dark gain patters it can contain. Either way is it a great piece of furniture and a perfect choice when deciding on unfinished furniture.

.

Oak: This is my favorite kind of furniture material due to the fact that the look of this wood has a really warm feeling to it and is still very durable. Many people use this kind of wood for hard wood floors. It can take a beating and still look good doing it. If you can find a good detailed piece of furniture I would definitely recommend grabbing it while you can.

Redwood: This is a great type of wood for unfinished furniture that is going outside. It is perfect to take weathering, bug resistant, and looks great. The downfall is that this wood is very work intensive to harvest so this makes it very expensive. Most people are familiar with this wood and how to work with it so there are plenty of finishing products available that are affordable and you can do yourself.

.

Aspen: Finally this type of wood has more off a white wash look and can also range all the way to grey tones. This wood is used a bunch in cabins and sauna’s. The moisture content of this wood is perfect when cut and when treated properly very easy to work with. You can find may pieces of unfinished furniture in this type of wood just waiting for you to put a nice clear coat varnish on it making it last a life time.

.

Those are the main kinds of wood that you can find in unfinished furniture. Many of these shops also carry other kinds of furniture like a nice rocking chair you might want to check out. Many people shy away from unfinished furniture but it is really something that you should not be afraid of. It has more character than any simple stacking chair that you can pick up anyplace. It is a very interesting craft that many people are taking advantage of and to help you build your relaxing environment this is the way to go. Unfinished furniture is warm and will add a sense of comfort to any relaxing environment.
