Upholstery is one of those overwhelming departments when looking to create your relaxing environment. On top of that there are so many factors that affect upholstery decisions. There are again like in many home décor areas so many options available for you to choose from. Since the internet and mass consumerism thousands of prints, patterns and textures are literally at your disposal. Hopefully we can sort through some of the considerations that need to be in your decision making when choosing upholstery fabric.

.

Considerations #1: Look at the room
This is one of the most important considerations that you need to really think about. Seems simple but sometimes it is so obvious many people just overlook it. Really look at the existing room décor and match it to what you see fit. For example, pick out certain colors or patterns that are in the room. This is the most important, especially to help match drapes or furniture to. Since there are so many patterns we will not go into all of the different kinds but it is important to look at the basic principles that will help you in home design. I will say it again, “Look at what is already in existence to match to.”

Consideration #2:
What is the Furniture Style
Another thing that is very important to look at is the furniture’s style. If you are buying a brand new piece of furniture and are getting the luxury to choose the upholstery fabric, than most of the time manufactures have already set pallets that are appropriate for that particular style of furniture so you do not need to worry about this and choose what you like. If you are reupholstering an existing piece of furniture it is crucial that you really take the style into consideration. Many upholstery shops will have years of experience and help point you in the right direction but it is a good idea to bring your own ideas to them so they get a feel of you and your style. Whether you are looking at designer upholstery fabric or discount upholstery fabric the print needs to match the style of the furniture.

Consideration #3: Availability & Cost
This is a major factor that affects your choice in upholstery fabrics. Depending on the popularity and cost some fabrics are more available than others. For example, many people love chenille upholstery fabric so much it has become more and more readily available. Especially for unfinished furniture that people are trying to make finished. Some of the more unpopular upholstery becomes rare and hard to find also. The number one reason that causes upholstery fabric to become unavailable is the cost. Some fabrics now days are so expensive they are almost impossible to get a hold of. It is a good idea that if you are doing your own upholstery or getting it done at an upholstery shop, the first question before you get your heart set on a pattern, style, or texture of fabric should be what the availability is and cost.

Consideration #4: Outlets
With all the options of upholstery fabric available to you, really consider looking into upholstery fabric outlets. These places can buy in bulk from overseas and really get you great deals sent to your door to do yourself or you can bring them over to your local upholstery shop. Most of us do not live close to a discount shop so the internet is our only way to see what they have to offer. One caution with is that the internet really does not do the amazing fabrics justice in pictures online. Most are way more detailed and colorful in real life than what they look like in the pictures. Outlets are a great option to really check out and research for the perfect upholstery fabric for your needs.

Hopefully this gives you a starting point in choosing what upholstery fabric is going to work for you. There are so many fabrics to count, it is important to get the basics down so that you can tackle all the options available to you and your specific piece you are working on. If it is a wicker chair, or a tub chair, rocking chair cushions or just regular chair cushions, fabrics are by the thousands and can add so much to your home environment.

Tip Review
Tip #1: No worries do not get overwhelmed with the millions of possibilities you can find what you are looking for. Just narrow it down as much as possible.

Tip #2: Match your new upholstery fabric to existing color schemes or accent colors of a room.

Tip #3: Always make sure the style of the upholstery fabric matches the furniture style it will be used on.

Tip #4: Always check availability of upholstery and cost.

Tip #5: Give upholstery fabric outlets a shot. They offer great deals, great quality and can be shipped right to your door.
